Recertification

EMS Providers are required to earn continuing education credits to maintain their EMS Certification.  There are several ways that an EMS provider may earn continuing education from traditional class room programs to online educational programs.  Each level of EMS Providers must earn the following amount of con-ed:

  • First Responders – 16 hours in 36 months (8 must be in the medical/trauma category)
  • EMT – 24 hours in 36 months (12 must be in the medical/trauma category)
  • Paramedic/PHRN – 18 hours in 12 months (9 must be in the medical/trauma category)

All providers must maintain an approved current Health Care Provider CPR card with their Regional EMS Council as identified by the Rules and Regulations.

EMS Instructor Recertification Requirements

  • Is currently certified as an EMS-Instructor
  • Is at least 18 years of age or older
  • Has current certification as a PA EMT, EMT-Paramedic or PHRN
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching the didactic and practical skills portion of the curriculum
  • Provide documentation of at least 60 hours of teaching EMS or rescue courses during the previous three years.
  • If you have not met the required teaching hours, you will need to complete 12 hours monitored teaching time by an approved EMS instructor
  • Has completed an EMS instructor update program within the past 3 years
